Velda Viola (Lunan) Weisensel

WEISENSEL, Velda Viola

February 14, 1934 – October 14, 2023

It is with profound sadness that the family of Velda Viola Weisensel (nee Lunan) announce her passing. Velda passed away peacefully at the Willow Creek Continuing Care Centre in Claresholm, Alberta on Saturday the 14th of October 2023, at the age of 89.

Velda was born on the 14th of February 1934 in Roblin, Manitoba – the first of five children to Clarence and Dorothy Lunan. Velda spent her early years in the Roblin area. She learned to play guitar at an early age and had a spectacular singing voice, often singing at parties and local dances.

In 1954 she met Mathias Leo Weisensel. They were married in Calgary on the 23rd of November 1955. Matt and Velda had 3 sons – Raymond Andrew, Glen Malcolm and Randy Joseph.

Matt and Velda moved to Claresholm in 1960 where they raised their family. Velda was a member of the Claresholm Legion, the Senior Drop-In Centre, and TOPS. She enjoyed playing bingo, getting out to card tournaments, and attending community events. Velda was a faithful sports fan, cheering and coaching from the sidelines at local hockey and baseball games. She could also coach the big leagues from her chair in the comfort of her living room.

Velda is lovingly survived by her sons Raymond, Glen (Jean) and Randy, two grandchildren Nicole Larkin and Ryan Weisensel (Kelsea), two great grandchildren, Austin Larkin and Oakley Larkin, their father, Damon Larkin, as well as her brother Verne Lunan (Joan) and many nieces and nephews.

Velda was predeceased by her parents Clarence and Dorothy Lunan, her children’s father Mathias Weisensel, her brother Gordon and his wife Lois, brother Allan, sister Barbara Wiebe and daughter-in-law Cathy Clarke.

A celebration of life service will be held Saturday the 28th of October 2023 at 1:00PM at Christ the King Catholic Church in Claresholm.
