In Loving Memory of Rick Huizinga July 27, 1961- January 06, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Dad, Rick Huizinga. Known for his wit, strong opinions and a stubborn streak that could rival the best of them. Rick was a man with a sense of humour that could light up a room. His quick wit and infectious laugh made him unforgettable to all who knew him.
Born in Cornwall, Ontario, to Anne and John Huizinga, Rick’s roots may have started in Ontario, but Alberta was always his home. He put that theory to the test by moving back and forth between the two provinces many times and even tried out BC for a bit, just to keep things interesting.
A truck driver by trade, Rick found joy on the open road, on his motorcycle and in the kitchen, whipping up his favourite dishes (he would definitely tell you he was the best). He also had the gift of gab and had friends from coast to coast, and boy, did they love to chat! No matter where they were, they’d call each other, catch up on their latest adventures, and solve the world’s problems, one road story at a time.
Above all, Rick was incredibly proud of his three children: Daniel DeJong, Crystal Clark (Robbie), and Sheri Clark (James). He never missed an opportunity to brag about them to anyone who would listen. To him, they were his greatest accomplishment and he would’ve done anything for them. Known as Grampy to his grandkids (Dylan, Abigail, Noah & Maaike) he loved watching them grow and encouraged their wittiness and burping on demand. He loved going to the Purple Turtle for pick your own food aka: Chinese buffet.
Rick was also lucky enough to have a second family in Blaine & Kate Ellis and their children Brandon Crane (Emily), Tyler Crane, and Toni & Cody Ellis who stood by him for over 35 years. Whether it was moving him, helping with paperwork, attending weddings and now, supporting him through his passing. Their friendship never wavered. Thank-you!
As per Rick’s strict instructions, there will be no funeral (because he said so). However, he didn’t say anything about not having a party, so in true Rick fashion, we’ll be celebrating his life with a big bash at a later date, most likely on his birthday. Because if there's one thing Rick would have wanted, is a good time with family and friends, and possibly a few “spirited” conversations to keep things lively.
His Mom (Anne Huizinga), brothers Terry (Donna) and Ralph Huizinga will also miss Rick. His father John and sister Carol Huizinga predecease him.
Rest easy, Dad. You were loved, larger than life and you’ll be missed more than words could ever say.
