Obituary

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Marlene Lavern Smith of Claresholm, Alberta. Marlene passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family at the Willow Creek Continuing Care on March 4th, 2022.

Marlene was born on August 20, 1949, to Viola and Vern Hartley of Calgary. Her childhood was spent with family and friends, playing baseball, basketball and skiing. Through these friends, Marlene met the love of her life, Phil Smith. Marlene and Phil married on September 19, 1970. Their family grew with the birth of their son, Jason.

Marlene enjoyed being busy and loved socializing, so when opportunities arose, she trained as a nursing aid and attended nursing school in Medicine Hat. She instructed kids as a Master Bowler and, most recently, a secretary for Porcupine Hills Classic Cruisers. She had an outgoing personality, and she was an excellent fit for any job, her love for sport carried on for many years as she continued to play baseball and pickleball.

Marlene always enjoyed country living and had the opportunity to live in Okotoks, Chestermere, Priddis, and Claresholm for the past 15 years. She enjoyed travelling to her second home in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, for the last 15 years. Here she enjoyed the warmth of the sunshine, attending car shows and reading a good novel.

Marlene was predeceased by her parents Viola and Vern Hartley and brother, Ron Hartley.

Marlene leaves behind to mourn her loss, her husband of 51 years, Phil Smith, their son Jason Smith and wife Carolyn, grandson Abbott, daughter Brenda Neis and husband Brian, granddaughter Madison, Carly and grandson Dylan, brother Dennis Hartley and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Special thanks to Willow Creek Continuing Care staff for the excellent care and support they provided for Marlene.
