Loreen Berg Obituary

Loreen (Wold) Berg passed away peacefully on May 19, 2022, at Cedar Creek Adaptacare Facility, surrounded by family.  She was born on August 29, 1931, in Sexsmith, AB, to Olaf and Mary Wold.  Mom was a twin in a large family of 11 children.   She was raised on a farm and grew up close to grandparents, cousins and other family.

She attended Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute. It was here she responded to an ad to care for five children on the Anker & Dagny Berg farm in Claresholm while Dagny was convalescing, which would lead to meeting a handsome Orlan Berg. They were married on July 8, 1953, and had five daughters.

Besides working on the farm and raising five daughters, she entertained many people throughout the years at her table. She was a fabulous cook and baker and was well known for her buns and cinnamon buns. She ran many meals out to the field during harvest and would invite several bachelors and friends to our table for meals, especially if they were alone for holidays. She worked at WCCHS as a caretaker and in the cafeteria, where she was well-loved by many students. She also enjoyed her time with Townsend Drugs and often reminisced about her days working in the drugstore.

Mom was a long term member of Peace Lutheran Church.  She had a strong faith in God and a servant's heart, always giving selflessly to others. She and Dad loved to sing in the choir and for many events such as weddings and funerals. She volunteered, helped raise money and was President of the Claresholm Auxiliary. She regularly canvassed for Heart & Stroke and the Diabetes Assn was a volunteer with the call button program for seniors and participated in many Terry Fox walks.

In retirement, Mom remained active and enjoyed camping, curling, golfing, gardening, playing dice and games with good friends and walking. She truly had a green thumb and could make anything grow. Mom and Dad drove across Canada many times to visit their daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren in Nova Scotia. They also travelled to Alaska, a trip to Europe, and went on many camping outings to the mountains and throughout the US.

She oh so loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed spoiling them whenever she could.  Her sons-in-law were each special and became like sons to her. She put up with their teasing and could give it back just as well, especially as dementia took hold in later years. She never lost her sense of humour or her memory of who we all were.

We are so blessed and thankful that our parents were so loving, kind, giving and instilled these values in us.

Lovingly remembered and forever in our hearts by her daughters: Cheryl Berg, Wendy (Gordon) Frank, Debbie (Bruce) Rathbun, Janice (Gord) Foxcroft, Brenda (Lindsay) Bell; her grandchildren Dylana (Dustin) Pretty, Trina (Mark) Pypers, Jill (Michael) Hooke, Greg (Erica) Frank, Marina Rathbun, Brad (Chelsea) Rathbun,  Dave (Angie) Rathbun, Michael Rathbun, Mitch and Riley Foxcroft; great-grandchildren: Olivia Pretty, Joshua Pypers, Eli & Wyatt Hooke, Eliesha, Natalie & Brendan Frank, Caspian Doak, Rory, Astrid & Rhys Rathbun, Alex & Claire Rathbun, Alina Foxcroft; her sister-in-laws Marlene (Jack) Thompson & Bernice (Per) Sakstad and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  She was predeceased by her husband Orlan and all 10 brothers & sisters – Olive, Ida, Eveyln, Doris, Lennie, Norman, Clarice, Lorna, Gordon, & Alden.

The funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, May 28, 2022, at Peace Lutheran Church, 4304 – 2 St West, Claresholm, with Pastor Donna Alm officiating.
